I love getting to know you, essay by essay. You write in a clean and honest way. I was also what we used to call “a bookworm.” In many ways, books saved me.
Now that I’m writing on Substack, I enjoy reading the work of others but rarely read books. Maybe this is a weakness of mine. I used to devour about six books a week. But whenever I’m writing, I usually stop reading books.
Maybe this is because I’m so impressionable? I fear the style of others writing in books would seep into my style. Does anyone else ever feel that way or is it just me?
Regardless, this essay is another enjoyable peek into your life. What a charming and cozy story.
With book reading, it’s so easy to get out of the habit of doing it. I find that reading other books while writing is inspiring, but I do understand not wanting to be overly influenced. There’s definitely a balanced that has to be striked!
@Amanda Greenidge, I am also on a book-writing journey and completely resonated with your childhood filled with reading books. I am trying to stay motivated and consistent and just keep going. Good luck with your novel! I’m already proud of you.
